Goodie Bag Giveaway!

Date: Thursday, April 2
The Delivery: A Genesis-Awards goodie bag
Staff Pick: Duh, the adorable baby seals!

The DL: OK, we know that technically this isn't our usual type of delivery, since it was hand-delivered by Elizabeth on Monday. And though our new products maven, Lyndsay, has been out the last few days, we just couldn't wait any longer to share this sweet swag bag with you, literally. That's right, one lucky responder will win this hefty goodie bag, full of fun stuff from HSUS, including two utterly cuddle-able stuffed baby seals, DVDs, outfits for your pooch, and tons of fab product samples. Remember, seals are for cuddling, not for clubbing. Since the Genesis Awards honor major-media coverage of animal issues, what story would you like to see honored at next year's event? Tell us your answer in the comments, and we'll pick a winning entry by next Friday, April 10.

I'd like to see more coverage of no-kill animal shelters. Euthanizing animals is beyond horrible.

I heard a story on NPR about whale farming in Bellesville, IL. I'd be interested in hearing more about that.

The rehabilitation of the Michael Vick fighting dogs. The work with them is ongoing, Best Friends is making amazing progress, and some are even getting ready to be adopted out to forever homes!

Delcianna said...

The media covering the mistreatment of the Ringling Bros elephants and the trial

Anonymous said...

I'd like to see more focus on the pets being abandoned in this economy and how no-kill shelters are managing the influx.

Either that or the San Diego seals case (which will hopefully be resolved soon and in favor of the seals)!

Being Canadian, the animal rights issue I am most passionate is banning the seal hunt. It's just horrid.

I would like to see more coverage of how animals who were raised in captivity have been rehabilitated and able to return to more natural habitat. It would be great to know more about what organizations we should support in their work for the animals.

I agree with lizzie ... I'm up for celebrating those helping to rehab fighting dogs

more coverage on rehoming strays thanks for the giveaway

I'd like to see coverage of puppy mills and what we can do to end the practice. Thanks! utgal2004[at]yahoo[dot]com

I'd like a follow up on all the puppy mill dogs that they're shutting down.

I would have to agree with previous people on the rehabing of the dogs used for fights.

I'd like to see someone do a story soliciting nominations for local Animal Rights Champions...people who devote time, effort and love to making better lives for our beast friends. Sanctuary owners, animal rescuers and rehabilitators, animal-friendly legislators, wildlife conservation photographers...people who are making positive change. Public votes would select a winner among the nominees. We need more positive stories and more inspiration for each of us to do a little thing to make the world a better place.

Thank you for the giveaway. I'd love to see a story on animal owners and how the pets are treated and what can be done to make sure they are not mistreated.

E said...

I'd like more coverage on puppy mills, how to shut them down and an expose of which stores and breeders use this practice.

I'd like to see more about animal shelters and how they are dealing with being full. What can they do find homes for these animals? Any special stories of a shelter that has found unique solutions?

MOMFOREVERANDEVER said...

really the shelters being full because of people being displaced because of the economy

I would like more coverage of the creatures under the sea. I think it is easier for people to relate to chickens, cows, seals etc. because in some way we relate them to dogs or cats. But I think a lot more people struggle with relating to fish, lobsters, crabs or shrimp. They aren't cuddly and adorable, nor are there well publicized studies about their social relationships or mental intelligence. But they are living beings who feel pain nonetheless and deserve to not have their environments destroyed by pollution and overfishing or to be thrown live into boiling pots of water.

I'd like to see something about abandoned pets in this economy and how no-kill shelters are managing it. Also some follow up on the animals displaced by the hurricanes a while back.

I would like to see more info on how people can help shelters, by fostering for instance

I just recently read even more horrid news about the horses being slaughtered in their OWN sables down in Florida. Truly a crime on so many levels. However, since it is about the Genesis Awards and honoring people; I would like to see the people involved with saving the dolphins of Japan honored.. It's part of their culture but the AMOUNT of dolphins slaughtered and for the length of time is horrendous... The Cove was shown at the Sundance Film Festival and a year or two ago Hayden Panettiere made the news with her role in trying to prevent some of the slaughter; yet it hasn't done anything... It's about the same effect as the clubbing of the seals... Everyone knows it happens but looks the otherway because it isn't happening HERE where it is in their face everyday. Egads did I just ramble on and on...

I'd like to see some coverage of the private citizens who are, at their own expense, participating in "trap and release" programs with feral cats, getting the their shots and getting them neutered. They're real heroes. asthenight at gmail dot com

I think fish farms are woefully forgotten all too often, even though they are as bad or worse than factory farms in terms of their impact on the environment and for the animals inside.

Lynda B. said...

I was really disturbed by the NPR story on whale farming. I feel like I need to learn more about this industry. (Thanks for asking!).

Leyla said...

I'd like to hear more about Canadian seal hunt

Tracie B said...

I would like to more shows bring awareness to the severity of Dog Fighting (such as Bones did this season).

Patty H. said...

So many issues...I think instead of focusing on a single issue, tribute should be made to those that promote veganism, such as Colleen Patrick Goudreau at Compassionate Cooks or Animal Voices Radio.

aVeganJourney said...

This is tough decision. I'd like to honor those who cover the horrid conditions in factory farms. The average non-vegan person may think clubbing seals is terrible but will still go ahead and eat a burger or chicken wing. Let's start with the fork. In my opionion, the more we can showcase how meat and sea animals get onto a plate or into a fast food bag the better.
Thanks! Love the Magazine!

Shari said...

I would like to see more about fish, specifically the genetically modified salmon in the fish farms, because all of this gene splicing is terrible and it has an effect on the other fish when the GM fish escape from the farms...it's very interesting but needs more coverage!

Megan said...

Pound seizure or by-catch.

Kathy said...

I would like more information on factory farms and any upcoming legislation that may regulate this industry.

Unknown said...

i would like to see more on the whaling industry and also how the increase of freighters and other boats are causing problems with the blue whales

veganewbie said...

I would like to see a story on the use of Circus animals and where they go after being used their whole lives. I know of one place in Galt, CA, that gives them a place to roam.

Luna said...

People that volunteer their time at animal shelters need more recognition! They deserve it! love.

I'd like to see coverage of Captain Paul Watson and the crew of the Steve Irwin.

Mary said...

I'm going to have to go with the seal hunt. Even though its going on now, you wouldn't know it, thanks to the media. I think if more people knew about it, there would be greater opposition.

srz said...

I would like to see more about the puppy mills. I would also like to see more about the fishing industry, not enough is said about how fish are treated.

Boston Diary said...

I recently moved to New England where everyone loves their lobster. But don't people realize how awful it is to boil them while they are still alive. I think this would be a great topic.

Katie said...

If I were to choose a topic that would reach the public on a mass level, it would be how dairy cows and their young are (mis)treated and just how direct a link there is between eating dairy and supporting slaughter and meat production.

My mother said to me she understands the horrors of eating meat, but doesn't care so much about the effect of consuming dairy products. I told her that veal farming is basically dependent on the dairy industry and that a lot of the times those greasy fast food hamburgers are made out of cheap, ground up dairy cows who had slowed down in milk production.

Slaughterhouses and the like are so obviously horrid - I think the dairy industry should be exposed for its contributions to depravity.

Julie said...

Ok, so I think I was duped by the whale farming on story on NPR... April Fool's!

I did hear a story recently about pythons in Florida that escaped from pet stores during hurricanes. I'd be interested to hear more about that story and find out what is being done.

I think that the next award show should spotlight the disappearence of different breds of frogs and the people who are trying to save them from extinction. These creates are showing problems caused by man's continuing to dump environmental pollutants into the water supply. Male Frogs developing female body parts in their male organs. What were considered stronge spieces dying out. This is our future if we don't support this work trying to find ways to reverse what has been done and reward the people doing it. Water is going to be the new gold; if things are not done now to improve the world's water supply.

Andrea said...

I hope the coverage on the lawsuit against Ringling Bros for elephant abuse gets enough press to warrant an award! People need to know.
Thanks. Andrea

I'd like to see more coverage of endangered creatures that are not so obvious -- such as the honey bees -- I don't think there has been enough attention given to it.

I would like to see coverage of the atrocious seal hunt going on in Canada and what's being done (or not) to stop it.

Cathy said...

I'd like to see some coverage about animals such as coyotes and foxes who have moved into neighborhoods. The coyotes are killing small dogs and cats and the only way to deal with this seems to be to kill the coyotes. What are other options?

Davidia said...

I live in Palm Springs and would love to see more coverage about the decline of the worlds honey bees. I really do not think main stream folks realize the impact of the declination and how it effects the worlds food supply. Here in the desert our wildflowers are not like they once were.

ceisenbe said...

I think that the seal hunt in Canada and what is (or isn't) being done to stop it should be covered. What is happening is atrocious and so many people, in America and abroad, are passively supporting this abomination.

I perfer the stories with happy endings. Shelter animals that so find homes. Animals that were saved by an inidividual or a group. Positive changes that companies are making to help animals. I am a vegan and horrible pictures of tortured animals break my heart!

I can never get the image of little chicks being de-beaked out of my head! I saw that video years ago, and it still haunts me. I'd like to see an expose on how chickens in the food industry are mistreated -- especially little cute, cuddly chicks who sometimes die from the shock of the pain! Ok, now I've made myself sad again...

Health care for our pets. Natural vets, keeping them healthy, etc.

Rob Branch-Dasch said...

Great news in the EU: they have just outlawed vivisection. This means many European imports are much more animal friendly. If industries there can go cruelty-free, all the excuses used here in the US for animal testing are proven invalid by colleagues in their own industries. That's powerful to industry - it's not just us animal-huggers anymore. How is US industry reacting? What new pressures are we bringing on them? How long do US vivisectors have left? Let's hope it's measured in minutes, not years.

I was most moved with the 30 Days animal rights episode that received a reward. I would like to see the efforts of individuals not affiliated with any one specific movement, but with animal rights' activism as a whole, honored. Perhaps pick a handful of specific people who've made a substantial difference to a number of different causes.

I would love to hear a story about rodeo animals and what can be done to ensure they are treated humanely.

Lindy said...

I'd like to see some emphasis on cockfighting. I live in a major city and sometimes the news feature raids of cockfighting rings, right in our neighborhood.

Another one would be on pit bulls.

roguewoman said...

I would like to see coverage of the relationship between the growing population of homeless people and their pets and what is being done to help both, as both have more critical needs.

Carolyn G said...

I used to live in NM and there were always stories of cockk fights and dog fights. I would like to see this issue given more exposure. The pictures coming out of the news stories were dreadful. ANd I believe it's more widespread than most people think

Miette said...

It would be nice to see a story on local humane societies and how they meet the needs of animals in their communities, as well as how communities can help them meet those needs. I wish all communities could have animal sanctuaries sponsored by local/state funding to help with educational issues and animals in need.
