New Books

The Date: Wednesday, June 8
The Delivery: Deep Green Resistance by Aric McBay, Lierre Keith, and Derrick Jensen; and Dreams by Derrick Jensen
Staff Pick: Deep Green Resistance

The DL: It is well-documented that climate change is real, species are disappearing daily, and fragile ecosystems are getting their flora- and fauna-filled butts kicked. Instead of scolding us, Deep Green Resistance promises to explore options that will help reverse environmental damage and give a plan of action for those who are determined to make the world a better place. One way we here at VNHQ like to do it? Go vegan! You'll save around 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Find out more about carbon dioxide, greenhouse gases, and the carbon offsets in our Planet feature on carbon offsetting.

Just curious if you were aware that one of the authors, Lierre Keith, is extremely anti-vegan. She is the author of the book The Vegetarian Myth.

"Anti-vegan" is a little bit off. In her book The Vegetarian Myth she shows precisely why a vegan ethic will not in fact help to save the planet. She shows how agriculture is a root problem of the destructive force civilization has on the Earth, and she also shows some health studies about why a grain based vegan diet is bad for individuals and the planet. She is not against vegans, she just debunked many of the myths of veganism to make a larger point; Civilization, and especially agriculture, are destroying the planet and veganism is not even close to being an effective solution to combat this.

The Vegetarian Myth is a fantastic book. I was a political strict vegan for 17 years and I now am very sick, registered disabled at 35. I wish I had read Lierre's book sooner, (obviously!) and I really look forward to these other two books. Keith and Jensen are both great authors.
